Today's meditation was about music. I was shown an image of a violin, and I heard the word, 'Music'. To me the violin is one of the sweetest sounding instruments, so I understand this message to mean that music can sweeten our life.
Music can bring back memories of happy times. Sometimes, I'll hear a song on the radio that I haven't heard in years, and I'm instantly transported back to a happy time in my life. When I hear 'Hey Jude', on the radio, my memories take me to my young teen years and the parties we'd have with our friends. Whenever 'Freebird' is played, I remember my high school days.
Music can also help us to process our emotions. Who doesn't want to listen to AC/DC's Highway to Hell or Thunderstruck when trying get through a frustrating experience? We want to sing along and get up and dance, right? That'll take some of the edge off and help us to get closer to understanding what's going on inside.
But, it's not that I just listen to rock music! When I wake up in the morning, I listen to spiritual music from Krishna Das and Deva Premal. This helps put me in the mood for yoga and meditation. If I hear the Gayatri Mantra, it takes me away to a beautiful space of timelessness, without dimension.
Music has always been a big part of my life. It's a great lift-me-up, brings back happy memories, and transports me to far-away places.
