A wise man was once asked: "Which is more important, to love or be loved?" To which he replied, "Which is more important to the bird, the left wing or the right wing?"
Many of us have no problem spending a great deal of time and energy supporting others, but in doing so, we often ignore our own needs. We may think we are being selfless, but this creates an energetic imbalance because we also need love. It's a two-way street, and bringing balance to the heart chakra requires that we reconnect with self-love before we can receive it from ourselves or anyone else.
But a lot of us may have a block to self-love and feel that we are unworthy and don't deserve it. Many of us have been hurt in the past. Maybe we grew up with conditional love, and when we didn't behave the way our parents wanted, we felt unloved; maybe we were hurt by a partner in a relationship. Whatever the reason for the wound(s), we have built a wall of defense around our heart to protect us from any future pain.
Healing the heart chakra begins with unconditional self-love. What is unconditional love? It's the love of a baby or a puppy; they don't care if you're not perfect. They are happy to see you and be with you just the way you are. Unconditional self-love is about getting out of the self-judgement mentality and accepting that we are, indeed, worthy, enough, and perfect just the way we are.
In opening the heart chakra, we need to allow ourselves to be vulnerable again. The wall that surrounds our heart is blocking love from flowing in. It's like an umbrella, shielding us from the sunlight. The sunlight is there, but we aren't receiving it. It's the same with love; we know it's there, but we aren't receiving it.
When we are in a state of unconditional self-love, we can pass on that love to others, which means holding space for them to be living to their highest good, and wanting to see them thrive, without requiring that they follow our agenda -- just supporting them with love.
