In my meditation, I saw the image of someone holding lemons in their hands, and I heard: 'When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.' I understand this message to mean that when a door is slammed in my face, another door of opportunity opens up for me.
When we came to the Big Island 3 1/2 years ago, we were following our hearts to come to this magical place. We also had the promise of a good job waiting for us, something that is not a given in this rural part of Hawaii.
A few days after we moved, I started teaching at UH Hilo in their International Program, prepping non-native English speaking students for taking college classes. I have been in this line of work for decades, and it is something I enjoy doing.
Unfortunately, the International Program was downsized after a year and half, and there was no longer any work for me. So, the door slammed shut on that job, but a new one opened up at Hawaii Community College, where I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for a year and a half.
Then, that program was downsized, and I found myself unemployed and in search of a new job. So, life was handing me lemons, and what I didn't know then was that I was about to make some lemonade.
I've been a Reiki master teacher and sound healer for years, but when I was a college instructor, I didn't have time to develop my healing business. So, when the universe slammed doors in my face, it was kicking me in the behind to move forward with my Reiki and sound healing practice.
Fast forward another year and a half, and I now have a thriving practice, with a high-vibe space for holding events and classes. The doors of opportunity keep opening up for me, and I'm now stepping into the business of holding Reiki retreats.
Looking back, I remember how hurt and rejected I felt about losing my job. If I had known back then that I would be running a successful healing business now, it would have helped me brush off the disappointment of having doors slammed in my face.
But, now I know for sure that I can take a big basket full of lemons and turn them into something delicious and enjoyable!
