In my meditation, I saw the image of someone holding lemons in their hands, and I heard: 'When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.' I understand this message to mean that when a door is slammed in my face, another door of opportunity opens up for me.

When we came to the Big Island 3 1/2 years ago, we were following our hearts to come to this magical place. We also had the promise of a good job waiting for us, something that is not a given in this rural part of Hawaii.

A few days after we moved, I started teaching at UH Hilo in their International Program, prepping non-native English speaking students for taking college classes. I have been in this line of work for decades, and it is something I enjoy doing.

Unfortunately, the International Program was downsized after a year and half, and there was no longer any work for me. So, the door slammed shut on that job, but a new one opened up at Hawaii Community College, where I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) for a year and a half.

Then, that program was downsized, and I found myself unemployed and in search of a new job. So, life was handing me lemons, and what I didn't know then was that I was about to make some lemonade.
