Jellyfish are some of the most beautiful creatures in the sea. They come in so many different shapes and sizes, some even looking like extravagant artwork. In the ocean, they float with the current to wherever it takes them, only using their muscles for short distances.
As I was once watching a jellyfish, I became mesmerized by its graceful dance, just moving with the flow of the water. After a while, I got to thinking that sometimes we feel like we are helplessly dependent on the current of life to take us wherever it wants to go. We may think that we have no control over our life. But then, I realized that I am not at all like a jellyfish in that I CAN actually determine which direction I want to go in. As Mark Batterson said, "You are always one decision away from a totally different life."
While I believe that 'going with the flow' is a good thing because battling against a strong current can be exhausting, we don't have to be spineless and allow the tide to wash us up. I feel that we can deviate from the well-trodden path and move toward our dreams and goals if we just use our muscles to take a step in a different direction. We may find that just outside the strong current, there is a place of calm, which allows us to steer us where we want to go.
I know that I am not helpless and 'fated' to live my life a certain way. I don't have to live out the rest of my days without making changes that are good for me. I can set my own course and help to create my own future.
