We've all heard the expression, "It's a drop of water in the ocean." This is often said to mean that something is insignificant compared to the environment around it. And sometimes, we may actually feel like we are just a tiny drop of water in the ocean, when we want to make a difference in the world and can't see that we're making any progress. We can feel very little and insignificant when we think about ourselves compared to the vast ocean, the more than 7 billion people on this planet, or the entire universe.
But I feel this message means just the opposite.
Yes, we are all drops of water in the ocean, but as drops, we are an important, intricate part of the whole. Far from being insignificant, every single one of us has an effect on our environment.
When we see a drop of water fall in a body of water, we notice that it sends out ripples. It makes waves! And to take the analogy a step further, whatever we do or say sends out ripples to our environment. Every day, we make waves when we send out our energy to our friends, family, colleagues, and the greater world. So, what we do and say does, indeed, have an effect on others, and they in turn, have an effect on those they come into contact with. It's a snowball effect!
There is such a feeling of unity knowing that we are all a part of something larger. We do, very much indeed, have an influence on our friends, family, community, the earth, and the universe!
